The disciples Prayer

by Pastor Calvin Lee

First Part :
1st petition / declaration
Our father be your name / God you are my father!
# Seek to know God more
(Matthew 6:31-32)
(psalm 20:7)

2nd petition / declaration
Your kingdom come / God you reign!
# Surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ

3rd petition / declaration
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven / Lord your will be done!
# submit to the ways of God

(the above is a form of Declaration)

2nd part :
1st petition / dependance
Give us this day our daily bread / I'm asking for daily bread : provision
(Philippians 6:19)

2nd petition / dependance
Forgive us our debts as we had forgiven our debtors / I am a sinner and in need of forgiveness : pardon
# You will never fully enter into the freedom of Christ unless you embark onto the path of forgiveness on others

3rd petition / dependance
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the hands of the evil one / I don't want to go on sinning : protection

@ Prayer is about relation not ritual. Prayer is not a formula

@ The focus of prayer must be on God not on self or others

@ Prayer lifts us to have a glimpse of the greater things, the glorious things, global things and most of all, the great God

@ What matters is the heart, not the art of praying

@ When we don't pray we allow our hearts to harden towards God and our thoughts and desires fall out of tune with God

@ When we are in connection with God, we are able to rest in Him, we become stroner spiritually, we are able to forgive one another, and we are able to resist temptation

The Reign of God in our Worship - Honoring God as the centre of our lives

Pastor Meng Chiam

Love the Lord your God
- Living in extraordinary times

Mark 12:28-31
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b] The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c] There is no commandment greater than these.”

Uncertain times, uncertain circumstances. Because we have a God who is sure and stable and impendable in all seasons.

The reign of God begins with our worship. Second is to "Love your neighbour as yourself"

Big idea :
Love him with everything you have. Love God with everything!
Mark 12:30
Love the lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength

1 John 5:3
In fact, this is love for God : to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome

Love the lord your God!
1. With all your heart
Proverbs 4:23
Mark 7:6-7
Luke 6:45
Proverbs 23:24

#"Give your heart only to ONE master"

2. With all your soul

- the soul has the everlasting part of your being even in death
- soul through the spirit is able to relate to God (Matthew 16:25)
- Until we give up all these soulish desires, we will not be able to have God as the ultimate satisfier of my soul (psalm 63:3)
# "let your soul be satisfied in God forever"

3. With all your mind
- this is the rational part of you
- use your mind to think biblically
- the grace of God is not just for intelligent people. It is for those who can discern between pleasing God and don't
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
- you should not let your mind take control, renew your mind!

Watch your thoughts,
For they become words.
Watch your words,
For they become action.
Watch your actions,
For they become habit.
Watch your habits,
For they become character.
Watch your character,
They become YOUR Destiny!

The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom

Romans 8:6
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the spirit is life and peace!

"Align your thoughts to God's word and wisdom!"

4. With all your strength
- the expression of your being
1 Corinthians 9:26-27

We exercise, have a healthy diet, sleep well (that's living responsibly)

# "use your abilities and strengths to glorify God!"

Unless the Lord is the lord of all, He is not our lord at all

Whoever loves God is known by God
1 Corinthians 8:3
