Exodus 17:7
And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
(IS THE LORD AMONG US?)
Exodus 17:8
The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
(REPHIDIM IS REGION ASSOCIATED WITH GOD'S PRESENCE, HOLY GROUND)
Deuteronomy 25:17-18
Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.
(AMALEK TREPASSED, OR PREVENTING ISRAEL GO WHERE THEY WANT TO GO, AMALEK USED WEAKNESS OF OPPONENT AND HIT HARD, AMBUSH THEM, THAT'S THEIR TACTIC)
1. God is never ambushed, even if we can't see the attacks coming
(WE CAN RELY ON GOD TO TAKE US THROUGH ANY DIFFICULTY)
Lesson 1:
GOD IS WITH US IN ALL OUR BATTLES, WHETHER WE SEE THEM COMING OR NOT
Exodus 17:9
Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
Exodus 4:2
Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” he replied.
Exodus 4:17
But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.”
Exodus 4:20
So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.
God used staff everytime a miracle is to be performed. It is God's involvement with the Israelites, serve as a visual reminder to Israelites.
Lesson 2:
WHO YOU DEPEND ON DEPENDS ON YOU
YOU MUST DETERMINE IN YOUR HEART IF GOD IS YOUR X-FACTOR OR YOUR AXED FACTOR.
Exodus 18:10
He said, “Praise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians.
In facing difficulties in our lives, everybody has a part to play.
Lesson 3:
HOW WE PARTICIPATE IN A BATTLE CHANGES HOW WE PERCEIVE IT
Exodus 17:13
So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
Exodus 17:14-16
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”
15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[a] the throne of the Lord,[b] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”
1 Chronicles 4:43
They killed the remaining Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.
Deuteronomy 25:17-18
Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.
(THIS VERSE SHOWS THE RESULT OF PEOPLE WHO OPPOSE GOD)
God will eradicate evil and opposition at the end of time, nothing prevails against Him.
God is with you in your time of distress, and God defends you when you are defenceless.

Exodus II - Settling into the New Normal
by Pastor Meng Chiam
God has in mind the people He restored to enter as God's images, this is a process call process of discipleship
1 Corinthians 10:11
These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
God is our Provider
Big Idea:
Yahweh tests our faith to reveal our trust in Him
Grumbling, complain and discontent (dissatisfaction) is Deficiency in our faith
Exodus 15:22-25
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[a]) 24 So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.
(I AM THE LORD YOUR HEALER)
Exodus 15:26
He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”
(LESSON OF TRUST)
Exodus 15:27
Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.
(REAPING BENEFIT EVEN IN THE DESERT, 12 REMIND OF 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL, 70 THE NUMBER OF JACOB'S FAMILY)
The test: Our fear of scarcity
The trust: God is our all sufficiency
Exodus 16:1-3
The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
(THE LORD IS OUR GOD)
Exodus 16:11-12
The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”
(THE LORD IS OUR GOD)
Exodus 16:4
Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.
(THE PROMISE)
Exodus 16:20
However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.
(THE CONDITION)
Exodus 16:27-28
Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you[a] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?
(THE CONDITION)
Exodus 16:32-34
Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.’” 33 So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, so that it might be preserved.
(THE TESTIMONY PROVE OF GOD'S PROVISION IN THE PAST)
John 6:48-51
I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
(IS THE LORD YOUR GOD?)
The test: Our preference for earthly satisfaction
The trust: God's Word is what we live by!
Exodus 17:1-7
The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?” 3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
(I AM THE LORD WHO IS AMONG YOU)
Massah is testing
Meribah is quarrelling
