The Disciple-Makers Journey

by Pastor John Lin

Big idea:
God desires us to extend grace towards all

1st point:
Extend grace to fellow disciple makers

1 Timothy 5:1-2
Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

A. Start by treating fellow disciple makers as family<
- with love and respect
- esteem older men within church as father
- treat younger men as brother
- exalt older women as mother
> - treat younger women as sister with purity
- guard against possibilities of sins

1 Timothy 5:5-10
The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. 7 Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.

B. Care for those who need help
- family first

James 1:27
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

1 Timothy 5:4-8
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. 5 The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. 7 Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame. 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

1 Timothy 5:6-16
But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. 11 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12 Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. 13 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. 16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need.

C. Respect those who serve and work with us

1 Timothy 6:1-2
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[a] of their slaves. False Teachers and the Love of Money These are the things you are to teach and insist on.

Regardless of whether their masters is a believer or not

So that the name of God and His teachings will not be reviled

Our conduct must be consistent with our conviction of God's word

Application:
We must show compassion to fellow disciple makers
- providing care to those in need truly

Our passion for Jesus must be consistent with our compassion for others

Point 2
Extend grace to leaders of God's household.

1 Timothy 5:17-25
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,”[a] and “The worker deserves his wages.”[b] 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. 23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. 24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

A. Honour leaders who serve faithfully

Do not muzzle an ox is reference from
Deuteronomy 25:4
4 Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

B. Restore leaders who need discipline
- in the presence of witness to prevent any malicious slander

Is to instil a healthy fear of God so that all the others leaders will be held accountability for their actions

1 Timothy 5:22-25
Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others.

C. Appoint leaders and disciple makers who are trained and proven
- choose wisely
- it takes time because good characters do not happen quickly

Application:
Establish accountability with leaders

James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

The more open and transparent we are, the less the enemy can use you, and the more God can use you

God desires us to extend grace towards all

The Disciple Makers Spiritual Growth

by Pastor Peter Lim

Big idea:
God wants us to keep growing as servants of christ

Since we're alive, we should be growing

God has deposited in us the potentials by the Holy Spirit

How do we get there?

1. Grow in the Word
1 Timothy 4:1-7
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. 6 If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,[a] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.

Paul is teaching Timothy that :
- some Teachers have their consciousness seared
- they forbade marriage
- they advocate abstinence from food thinking is a sense of spirituality

Marriage is an institution given by God and sexual act from God. Food are not to be rejected but to be received with thanksgiving. Jesus already declared all food to be cleaned

Timothy has to be :
- trained/nourished
- grow in the knowledge
- learn to apply the word of God
- Impart sound doctrine and not mislead others

How do we grow in Gods word?

1. Meditate on God's word for spiritual nourishments
- like digestion process, go through 5-7 metres of intestine so that body can absorb food slowly
- similarly Gods word must be slowly digested by repeating it in your mind
- speaking it verbally
- believing it with your heart
- Internalising the principles

It takes time!

- Start with simple verse
- ask holy spirit to quicken your heart to receive the word
- remember it
- repeat it verbally
- reflect on every word of the verse
- pray the word of God

2. Grow in Godliness

1 Timothy 4:7b-12
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. 11 Command and teach these things. 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

- train means like a pro athlete in sporting event, vigorous, alludes intense assertion, strict discipline in top form

Value of Godliness are eternal benefits, a life totally consecrated to God, pursue of God and godly behaviou, labour and even hardwork

Godliness is both the pursuit of God and godly behaviour

These are observable traits of the heart and relationship with others

Godliness relates to one's spiritual practices in private with God as well as how one relates to others.

Growing in seniority is automatic, but growing in maturity is not. It requires intentional effort to keep on

Discipline is essential for disciple makers to grow in Godliness

To invite someone to journey with you and hold you accountable

Application 2:
Find an accountability partner

3. Grow in ministry

1 Tim 4:11-16
Command and teach these things. 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

- Command and teach sound doctrine
- Emphasis here is to rely on holy spirit
- Persist and practice
- Consistency and perseverance so we would not stop growing so people will be saved

Application 3:
Grow in your ministry skills by continual practice

Specifically, we must grow in our abilities to win people to Christ, nurture them in the faith, and release them to do the same.

The Disciple Makers Testimony - The household of God

Ps Joey Asher

Big idea:
God desires for us to have a good testimony as His Disciple Makers

1 Tim 3:5
(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)

1. Being an example to all believers

1 Tim 3:2-3
Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

Being above approach means to :
- Lead a private or public life that is consistent with what we profess we believe
- Cultivating a lifestyle which can withstand scrutiny
- Able to be humbly corrected

Being self controlled and behaviour should reflect emotional maturity , by doing so we set a contrast example to believers and non believers

When the world looks at our lives, will they see a reflection of Christ?

The above verse also provided for all believers who is mature, who want to be a Disciple Maker or leader

2. Being an example by leading our family well

Paul emphasize in
1 Tim 3:4
He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[a] respect.

1 Tim 3:12
A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well.

- Faithful in marriage
- Managing kids well
- Keeping them respectful
- A family where faith can flourish

Church don't disciple your children for you, but disciple your children in partnership with you

Our private conduct matters as much as our public behaviour

People are looking as us to see if our Christian faith is making a difference in our lives , not a checklist of perfection for for us to grow towards

Demonstrate consistent growth through the power of the holy spirit

Show non believers the transforming power of the gospel reality in our everyday life

1 Tim 3:5
(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)

Doesn't mean to have perfect family but to have faith in gospel transforming power in our lives

Our behaviour at home should align with our behaviour in public

1 Tim 3:14-15
Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

How should we behave because as DM we're representing God's household to the world - believers and non believers

Having a good testimony is living in a way that doesn't just reflect our relationship with God, but also living in a way that is a good reflection of him

The world is observing family members in the household of God in the church because we image God and we represent God to those around us

The Disciple Makers Gathering

Ps Wilson

Big idea:
God wants us to focus on the mission of disciple making

5th commandment says Honour so we can live a long life

1 Tim 2:1-2
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Pray for our authorities That we may Lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way

1. Even though early church faced persecution from the Roman authorities, Paul instructed the church to pray for them

Why?
1 Tim 2:3-6
This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

- God says it is good
- pleasing in God's sight
- who desire all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth

2. Such prayers seek God's intervention to bring both the good and wicked to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. See the eternity from God's perspective

1 Tim 2:7
And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.

Paul urge for prayers because prayers could change the outcome of people's lives

Disciple Making is the process of leading someone to follow Christ, guiding him to be transformed by Christ, and releasing him to fulfil Christ mission of Disciple Making

When we pray we must be ready for God to use us as His vessel

1 Tim 2:8
Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

Men ought to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or dispute.

3. Paul instructed the men to resolve their issues quickly so they could pray with the right posture before the lord

Be Mission focus witness for Christ

1 Tim 2:9-10
I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

Women Outward appearance cause there was a group under false teaching to exert their dominance and control over the cell group , dressed up opulently to flaunt their wealth. Paul was against the excessive way of dressing that some women came to church with, braided hair adorn with gold and pearls. Modesty, self control, respect

4. Paul wanted women to demonstrate inner beauty and character more than adorning accessories

1 Tim 2:11
A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.

Contentious attitude of women.

Paul was not suppressing women but rather on their social issue arising from women with wrong teaching

1 Tim 2:12-15
I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[a] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[b] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Paul disallow women to teach because these group propagated wrong doctrines and nulify the apostles teaching

5. Paul used the example in genesis 3 to remind the house church that the serpent deceived eve, and that the deception led to the fall of both Adam and eve

Paul instruction should not be used on women today in 2024. Paul did that was because of the context of the Ephesian church within patriarch

1 Tim 2:15
But women[a] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Different scholars have different translation for this verse

This verse do not mean women earn salvation through childbearing

Ephesians 2:8-9
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

By grace you have been saved through faith...

Possible interpretation:
1. Bear the fruit of faith
2. Love
3. Holiness instead of deception

Paul was not asking the women to give birth to children but to give birth to godly virtues that would lead them away from the same consequence of eve

Restore the importance of prayers in my home, in my life
