What you promise, you must honor

by Pastor Wilson Teo

Big idea:
We must honor the commitments and promises made to God

1 Samuel 1:2-8
He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. 3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”

Avoid building the foundation of our marriage solely on children and marital assets. You'll see a rocky marriage when things do not act up, because it's based on what you have. It has be built upon love and commitment and honor to each other.

1 Samuel 1:9-11
Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

The Old Testamnet word "LORD" - Yahweh (YHWH)

1 Samuel 1:19-28
Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[a] saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.” Hannah Dedicates Samuel 21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[b] 23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his[c] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[d] an ephah[e] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Elkanah had the positional and spiritual authority to nullify Hannah's oath. but he did not do that and together with Hannah, Elkanah honour Hannah's commitment to the LORD.

Does God always answer my prayers when I make a commitment or promise to Him?
The bigger the gift, the higher the chance of answer?
YHWH cannot be bought. We gift and give to God because we love Him, not because we want something from Him. It is wrong to think we can exchange something with God. Hannah's prayer was aligned to God's will.

God foreknew the need for a prophet to replace the wicked priests and Hannah's prayer to consecrate Samuel was aligned with his will. Our prayers are answered when they are aligned to God's will.

Key to answered prayer is alignment to God's will.

Just because we hang a carrot stick infront of God, does He have to accept? He is God and He determined what is best for His children.

Was Hannah short changed when she honoured God with her firstborn son?
1. God removed the cultural discrimination of barrenness against Hannah.
2. God added more children (5 more) to Hannah after consecrating Samuel.
3. God protectewd Samuel in his growing-up years

1 Samuel 2:21
And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord. Hannah was not shortchanged.

May my children grow up in the presence of the Lord away defiling from the world system

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

by Pastor Wilson Teo

Holy Spirit can give spiritual gifts to members of the body

Big idea:
God give spiritual utterances to edify, encourage and comfort us.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Prophecy
Speak in tongues

Tongues are supernatural abilities to speak in human or angelice languages enabled by the Holy Spirit for praying, praising, and thanksgiving unto God.

Principle #1
God gives spiritual gifts to empower believers for ministry

9 spiritual gifts listed here but there are more... it is not exhaustive but these are commonly used in corinthian housechurch

1 Peter 4:10-11
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Above verse says that everyone would have at least one spiritual gift.

1 Corinthians 13:1
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.

Paul gives instruction to believers to ernestly have strong desire for gifts of the Holy Spirit

Principle #2
Every believer should desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit

The challenge is whether we desire the spiritual gifts and to operate in them to benefit the community

Gifts means charismata or charis = give graciously and generously

Example of human tongues given by Holy Spirit in human language

Acts 2:1-8
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

Example of angelic tongues

1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Paul classify 2 groups. That of men and angels

1 Corinthians 14:2
For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Paul explains that tongues were meant solely for God. They are mysteries uttered unto God. Tongues can be either human or angelic language

What's the purpose of tongues? Why do we need?

1 Corinthians 14:4
Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

Tongues are supernatural enablement or empower of Holy Spirit given to us to build up our spirit man

1st reason:
for building up of oneself in the spirit

Romans 8:26-27
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

We can also pray and intercede with heavenly language when we have no words to pray

1 Corinthians 14:13-17
For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[a] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

Tongue is for prayer, sing praise unto God and thanksgiving

Tongues are directed to God, not human

2nd reason:
Enable believers to pray and praise and give thanks to God through the Holy Spirit

Interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 14:6
Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

1 Corinthians 14:9-13
So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church. 13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

1 Corinthians 14:16-17
Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,[a] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

1 Corinthians 14:18-19
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

The purpose of the interpretation of tongues is to interpret the message spoken in unknown tongues for the Body to be edified, encouraged, and comforted.

So the interpreted message must also carries the same message of prayer, praise and thanksgiving.

Must be God focus.

Tongues + Interpretation not equal to Prophecy
Tongues + Interpretation EQUAL to Prayer, Praise or Thanksgiving

Prophecy

1 Corinthians 14:3-5
But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[a] but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[b] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Prophecy can be defined as the speaking forth of an intelligible message that the Holy Spirit has spontaneously revealed to a believer intended for the faith community's edification, encouragement, and comfort (EEC)

EEC prophecy Edify, Encourage, Comfort

Unless you are a proven prophet and affirmed by church, do not give prophecy beyond EEC as these words can bring harm and confusion

The Revelatory Gifts

by Pastor Meng Chiam

Principle #1
God gives spiritual gifts to empower believers for ministry and service to the body

Principle #2
Every believer should desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit

Big idea:
God gives supernatural revelation to encourage us to live a God-pleasing Life

1 Corinthians 12:4-11
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.

Revelatory Gift #1
The utterance of wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:12-13
What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Principle #3
Spiritual gifts reveal God's nature and character in a tangible way

Utterance of wisdom comes spontaneous, spirit enabled of the purposes of God for the salvation of the world, both individually and globally

Genesis 41:15-16
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”

Genesis 41:34-36
Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

Revelatory Gift #2
The Utterance of Knowledge

A spiritual supernatural insight given by the Holy Spirit into the otherwise unsearchable depths of God's work in redeeming humankind

John 4:17-19
17 “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” 19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.

John 4:29-30
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

Principle #4
The exercise of spiritual gift is to be motivated by love to meet a need.

Revelatory Gift #3
The Distinguishing of Spirits

Not every spiritual manifestation is origin of the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good,

The distinguishing of spirits is the supernatural ability to detect, identify and differentiate between the various sources of spiritual manifestations.

1 John 4:1
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Acts 5:1-5
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. 3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.

Acts 5:11
Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
