The Revelatory Gifts

by Pastor Meng Chiam

Principle #1
God gives spiritual gifts to empower believers for ministry and service to the body

Principle #2
Every believer should desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit

Big idea:
God gives supernatural revelation to encourage us to live a God-pleasing Life

1 Corinthians 12:4-11
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Revelatory Gift #1
The utterance of wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:12-13
What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Principle #3
Spiritual gifts reveal God's nature and character in a tangible way

Utterance of wisdom comes spontaneous, spirit enabled of the purposes of God for the salvation of the world, both individually and globally

Genesis 41:15-16
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”

Genesis 41:34-36
Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

Revelatory Gift #2
The Utterance of Knowledge

A spiritual supernatural insight given by the Holy Spirit into the otherwise unsearchable depths of God's work in redeeming humankind

John 4:17-19
17 “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” 19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.

John 4:29-30
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

Principle #4
The exercise of spiritual gift is to be motivated by love to meet a need.

Revelatory Gift #3
The Distinguishing of Spirits

Not every spiritual manifestation is origin of the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good,

The distinguishing of spirits is the supernatural ability to detect, identify and differentiate between the various sources of spiritual manifestations.

1 John 4:1
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Acts 5:1-5
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. 3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.

Acts 5:11
Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
