Time to Unfollow

by Pastor Wilson

Jesus calls, we follow: the start of disciple making

We have made a decision to follow Christ and unfollow the world

To be Changed and transformed by him and join in his mission

Big idea:
Jesus calls people into disciple making by inviting them to follow Him, by changed by Him and join His mission

Luke 5:1-3
One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

Jesus converted a place of work to a place of ministry. By stepping into Peter's boat even when Peter was washing his net after finishing his work

What was Christ teaching the people?
Not millionaires or riches or how to be powerful but Kingdom values and kingdom principles, loving your enemies

Luke 6:37
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Luke 6:43
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

Luke 6:46
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Luke 5:1-3

Kingdom truths such as:
- Loving your enemies (Luke 6:27-36)
- Releasing forgiveness (Luke 6:37-42)
- That one's life is seen by one's fruit (Luke 6:43-45)
- And how one should build his house on the foundation of God's word (luke 6:46-49)

Luke 6:27-36
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:37-42
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” 39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. 41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Luke 6:43-45
“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

luke 6:46-49
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Luke 5:4-5
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

"But at your word I will let down the nets"
- Peter was tired, closed shop
- came jesus a carpenter to instruct Peter who was a fisherman by trade
- despite it, Peter obeyed

Luke 5:6-11
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

- Nets so full that boat began to sink
- Morning not a good time to fish

Divine encounter transformed Peter from fisherman to fishers of men

They repented and surrendered and gave their lives to follow Jesus, it was not idealogical but transformational

# This divine encounter transformed Peter, James and John from Fishermen into Fishers of men

Christianity is a religion that demands total dedication to Christ teaching and follow his mission

1. The first group comprises those who are afraid to have Jesus Christ come into the boat of their lives

"Spectators"
- Enjoy services weekly
- but you will only fully experience Christ when you fully allow jesus into your boat
- head knowledge Vs experiencing Jesus in your heart
- Unless you welcome Jesus into your boat, you only know Christ in your mind and not experiencing him in your heart

2. The second group comprises those who have welcomed Christ into our boat, but we don't want Him to interrupt us as we mind our business and clean our nets

- we are fine with jesus in our group
- We don't want him to interrupt us as we mind our business and clean our nets
- Christ must not rock the boat in my life
- we're afraid Jesus will take us out of our comfort zone and disrupt our activities
- we have changed the supernatural for the mundane
- Only James, John and Peter obeyed out of so many fishermen present. They become participants in the supernatural because they allowed Christ to interrupt and disturb their routines

God's power is meant for God's mission. We need to make space for holy spirit to come into our lives

Be ready for Holy Spirit disruption

3. The third group of us are those who have welcomed Christ into our boats, obeyed His words to release our nets, experienced His power, and yet we take our nets along to follow Him

- Nets become a burden for us as we follow Christ
- James and John most likely was raised as fishermen since young yet they left their security behind because they saw someone of higher importance and value than what they were doing
- Christ mission and purpose became their purpose
- we take our nets with us because we are afraid of being short-changed by Christ mission for us

We can have everything in life but yet the most miserable person living

Hear from the holy spirit and release whatever is our safety nets

Has God given you the success and the position of where you are just for personal interest or for God's intend and purpose?

Am I participating in the mission of Christ in Disciple Making till the day I stand before my saviour king to say I have lived my live in obedience?
